In my opinion, good choice. I do prefer using the machine for my quilting purposes. Nor do I need a lot of fancy stitches. Just the basic stitch and a good lighting source. Remember, comfort and safety always.

Most of the time, I look for remnant fabrics or buy a large amount of fabric when it is on sale. I just make sure the same type of fabrics are stored together to avoid confusion later.

Sometimes just getting started is a big step, getting started on the right foot is better. Before you begin your quilting project, know the fabric you will be using. You may want to wash the fabric before you use it. Usually, I stay with the same type of fabric throughout the project. Sometimes things are just done on a trial and error process.

Check out the link for some beginners quilting patterns. For me, I had a much easier time picking a small project using large squares or patterns. Reason number one is that because it is a smaller project, you will not get as frustrated. Reason number two is that it is easier to learn something new on a much bigger scale then a smaller one. It does give you a little more room to practice. Remember, this is what worked for me.

As a beginner quilter, it is always a good idea to have a few tips from experience. My best tip is to find a comfortable spot and so that you are not bent over at an awkward angle. Also, allow yourself some room to get up and move around. It is always good to step away and take a look again. You may have overlooked something. (Just so you know, that has only happened a few times. Do not worry, it is part of the learning process.)

It never ceases to amaze me that even after all this time and all my quilting projects that I sometimes have to stop and look and research something. If you do not have someone that can show you some quilting techniques, having a nice selection of reference materials is important. It is much easier and less stressful if you have a basic knowledge of quilting basics like terminology, stitching techniques and an idea of your pattern. Click on the link to find more.

If you are just beginning to quilt, click on the link to find some ideas. When I first started quilting, I poured through quilting books to learn how. My first project was a very large quilt. As you "live and learn" I would have started with something small and very simple. The project will be a lot easier for you to move around and just get a feel for quilting.
